Don’t Crash the Car Tonight – Mary’s Danish

Not sure why, but I’ve been on a big Mary’s Danish kick lately, and there is limited postable content on the net, so you get the classics. Other great tunes, if you can find them, are Julie’s Blanket, Killjoy, and O Lonely Soul…, which I’d post if I could, but thems the breaks.

Saw them at UCR during my freshman year. They played at the Barn somewhat regularly, which at the time had a sort of seedy bar feel, but apparently is now a “casual dining location“. At least it’s still there. Good place to see a show, or to drink before going to see a show at the Rec Center. I think Cracker played there a few times while I was in school. Dramarama as well.

I don’t what it is about female fronted rock acts, but they seem to deliver a ton of energy in their performances. Throwing Muses comes to mind, as do the Raveonettes, and the Peels. I would use a “see them live” tag, but they’ve been broken up for over ten years. Anyway, these guys were great, and they got totally scewed by their record company. I’m not lying, that’s a pretty interesting article if you have the time to read it. Enjoy:

  • I loved this song from the first time I heard it. I don’t listen to enough Mary’s danish, although I never got their followup, because I ddin’t care for the first single.

Other female-fronted rock act (also sadly defunct): Fetchin Bones. Glass Eye. The Primitives. Velocity Girl. Dance Hall Crashers. all incredibly high energy, as noted; although I don’t know if any of them are still together.

I’m an old guy, I don’t keep up with the new Sounds. Kids today, I tell ya.

  • OMG. Dance Hall Crashers is my very very favorite. I still listen to Lockjaw ALL THE TIME.

I liked mary’s danish, but was never that into them. I am pretty sure I saw them at UCSD once. We’re living parallel lives Seitz.

These past SotD’s have been a tour through my formative years.

  • BP, I wrote tomorrows SOTD before your comment, fyi.

I never liked this song, mostly because of the voices. Kind of like dime store Exene Cervenkas maybe? I’m sure it would have been awesome live. There is a weird slickness to some of these 90s tunes that wouldn’t be there live, thus the likely improvement.

  • OK, somebody needs to take a gigantic dump on the Morgan Creek guy’s lawn. WTF? Jesus H. Seriously, maybe Frozen Urine Treats are in order.
