This is the first in a series of “Coming Attractions” posts for me, though I suppose in actuality, most of my posts here are in that vein.
This is a Chicago band, so I can never tell if the all of the buzz is local, or indie nationwide, but I know they’ve had some Pitchfork love. I caught a bit of their set at the Pitchfork Festival this year, but I think we were waiting for Neon Indian to start, so we probably weren’t paying attention, and quite honestly, it didn’t sound that great. Also, I don’t love their first album. And of course, you’d be justified in pinning the P4k praise on their willingness to appear at the Festival.
But I gave in to the hype and gave the new album Dye It Blond a try and I was sold about 15 seconds into this track, which leads off the album. I mean, those are some seriously great hooks in that first guitar part. Really all of the guitar work on this album is phenomenal, and the production values are pretty decent, making the whole thing fun to listen to. They sound like a cross between the happy and druggy eras of the Beach Boys.
They get another chance to impress me at the Empty Bottle in a couple weeks. They wouldn’t be the first band I hated at Pitchfork but subsequently loved in a proper venue.
Pandora birthed this effortless Spoon guitar triumphalism it’s so easy everything is perfect we are Spoon suck it talentless audience were are awesome Spoon who are you you are sad yeah I am but Spoon doesn’t even break a sweat it is so easy hey want to be pals really yeah wow you we be pals with me yeah we are Spoon we love everyone doesn’t everyone?

I post this song from the stellar Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga album for two reasons: First of all, I don’t think this song is getting the same radio play that Don’t Make Me A Target and You Got Yr Cherry Bomb are getting, whereas it is equally stunning. The intensity of the piano chords gives the music a creepy and pulsating feeling. The video captures that well.
Most importantly, this is a massive FU to every one of you haterz that has ripped on Supertramp now or ever. Well, just eat it. This is the demonic and supreme reincarnation of the Supertramp sound and it reigns on your feeble souls. There.
A song that seems familiar, but seems like it missed the Classic Rock stations when I was growing up (too new, 1981, I guess) so now it is sneaking into the cheese rock formats that don’t play too much Crüe and still play stuff like Steve Miller, etc. This song is Song of the Day mostly because I knew that Girl Talk was sampling something in the song “Friday Night” where he overlays Juelz Santana riffing on The Waitress “I Know What Boys Like” from the remix of Chris Brown’s “Run It” on top of something. We in turned sampled that bit from our Jonah Goldberg battle rap. So I heard “Ah, Leah” on the radio this weekend, and now I know where the cool part comes from (1:37 to 1:53 in the vid below). The song is relatively slick AOR for 1981. The woman in the video does, as someone mentioned on YouTube, look like she’s trying to poop.
The best part is that I allowed serendipity to identify the sample for me, although Wikipedia ruins all the fun/saves the day and has the entire Night Rippersample list (it is extensive).
Does it make me a bad person if I know someone that owns the actually karaoke disc for this song (not just the video, which is in the form of a karaoke video)? Does it make me an even worse person if I’m the one that bought it? Sometimes you needs some “woos” and “ooh ooh oohs.” Seriously, eat it if you are not down with the derivative and awesome stylings of the Dandy Warhols. Marginally not safe for work- the clip is unedited, and I think I saw someone’s doodle!
Remember The Secret Machines? We kinda do, although it has been a while since we anybody made much a fuss about them. I mean besides us. Anyway, their last CD, Ten Silver Drops, has been out for well over a year, and it never really got its fair accolades. This is probably the most addictive and recognisable track from the CD. It also sounds the most like the best songs on Now Here is Nowhere, but better than any single track on that CD. Featuring the impossibly growing driving beat and singalongable harmonizations, I can’t get this song out of my head. Not only do I not want it to end, but when it eventually does, I keep it going on the inside. The lyrics are kind of neat as well. There is some wordplay on blinding/lightning and songs about blue eyes are almost always destined to be classic. Every instrument is perfect. There is even a lovely canon embedded in the 2nd refrain. Something for everyone, really. If anyone hears of a 40 minute remix of this song, please let me know ASAP.
I can’t wait for the White Stripes backlash. This will make it easier for me to piss you off. Consider this post the first of many “touch touch touch touch touch I’m touching you” (you: “don’t touch me. you’re on my side of the car”) in the backseat of the station wagon while our parents are dragging us to Craters of the Moon National Monument. I still like them and dedicated followers of fashion cannot dissuade me.
So I am kind of on a spacy, psychedelic, stonery, retro kick. Sue me. The Black Mountain self-titled is great. This song is OK, but not even close to the best, there are more interesting, diverse tracks on the album. My current fave is the spookier druggy Neu! amalgam “No Hit.” The most interesting part of the albums are certain touches that seem un-sinister turned druggy and sinister, such as hand claps and tasteful female backing vocals. The main dude in this band is also responsible for the band Pink Mountaintops, a folkier, countrier, equally druggy, retro, and awesome as Black Mountain. Went to the Shins concert tonight, which was expectedly awesome. But there is very little interesting to write about seeing one of the best bands today at the top of their game. No, the actual massive surprise was from the opening band, Viva Voce, who kicked almost as much ass as The Shins did. OK, maybe half that ass, but that’s still an impressive ass and way more than the typical 3 Bulls half-ass. Viva Voce, who announced their name about six times during the show and added that they are from Portland, Oregon, are the classic husband/wife team. Kevin plays the drums, sings, and occasionally rocks out on the acoustic guitar, whereas Anita is a guitar goddess of the highest decree. She also has a great voice, and really should become Chuckles new rock crush, Eleanor Friedberger be damned. Their music ranges from almost ’60s-era folk rock to complete Yo La Tengo free-form freakouts, and they are witty and play with aplomb.
Most of the songs they performed, all of them excellent, were from their new album Get Yr Blood Sucked Out. The best song from the set was this track, nicely put to a cheeky video. Musically, it is not representative of the other tracks, but it’s really goddamned catchy. The song evokes a little Grateful Dead and some music that Pinko Punko totally knows and I just can’t get to the tip of my fingers. But it’s good in a familiar and awesome way. Anyway, check out the video and check out their other songs as their myspace page. We Do Not F*ck Around is another super good track, of which they opened and closed with different variations on the song.

Sure it’s a little Spin Doctory. Sure they borrowed a chunketylish riffyraff from Teh SWEET’s “Fox on the Run.” Sure the bando plays Led Zeppo in the vid. Too bad its your Song of the Day. You just ate it!
