Tonight begins the week+ of shows, where I have a concert to go to pretty much every night but Sunday. So yep, another Coming Attractions post. CHVRCHES will be playing sold out shows at Lincoln Hall on Monday and Tuesday. I’ll be at the Monday show.
CHVRCHES are a synthpop band from Glasgow that apparently generated quite a buzz at SXSW this year (or last year, or whenthehellever it was). Enough that this song was played fairly repeatedly on XMU at roughly the time I was home in California for about two months (where my parents’ cars had satellite radio), which meant I heard this song until it was seared in my brain and I couldn’t get it out. They’ve only got a few singles, b-sides, other releases, etc. (including a live cover of Prince’s I Would Die For You, which they’ll probably play next week). Still, despite not having an album, they’ll be playing in front a lot of sold out crowds in the coming weeks.
I don’t really have much to say about this song other than that I like it a lot, and as the blog proprietor knows, I’m a sucker for bands with cute female lead singers. This isn’t the type of show I would normally go see, but it’s at a great venue, and I get the sense that with this amount of buzz, they won’t be playing venues the size of Lincoln Hall very long. Kind of like when I got dragged to a Mumford and Sons show at LH a few years ago, a couple months before they’d be playing the Riviera, which is 5x the size of LH. So, notch on the belt, I guess.
I don’t know if the zombie will like this one, but it is a “nice 70s glam stomper” filtered through some Electro Buck Rogers as maybe people say about this stuff. Realistically it is like a military new wave with some Goldfrappian touches, but I dig Goldfrapp so I think this is nice. What I don’t necessarily love is that a band commentary track released with this a few weeks back talked about kids being crushed under student loan debt as relating to the song, and this line has kind of been bandied about in reviews. The lyrics strike me as being a lot tougher than student loans. Weirdly I could see Muse Glenn Becking this song up, (without their own consent of course). What am I talking about? SONG OF THE DAY

I have always liked Ladytron, but in my busy life I maybe download some of their older albums and forget to listen so Pandora serves it up and I am all “LIKE” and then I realize I own it and am happy. Black plastic touching my plastic. Bleep bloop. So good.
I had forgotten that I bought Ladytron’s latest, Gravity the Seducer, and in fact had played it quite a bit for a week. These “electroclash” mavens are like a chillier, krautrockier, electronic Lush- but that’s not right either. They put out consistently listenable records that seem infected with something in between iciness and aloofness- you’ll see these words a lot in Ladytron reviews, but it is hard to explain. Their latest isn’t as immediately gripping as their last few, but it has an electronic warmth and softening that differentiates it. I think this is the strongest track and in fact it is one of my fave Ladytron songs at the moment.
Beyond the inevitable or faux nostalgia, the first half of this video is several fold more complicated than many bottom of the barrel full length films these days. I realize that statement makes it seem like I listen to Elvis Costello and the Unattractives, but that doesn’t make it any less true.
I know we just did a Ladytron, but this song has been on my mind lately. I’ve just gotten their new one, Velocifero, but haven’t had a chance to listen. This is from their top-to-bottom super solid Witching Hour. The album strikes one as “pretty good” on first listen, but it is just so listenable it has to get a knock up a level.
This song is part of the continuing series of songs that I have no right listening to, liking, or blogging. Ladytron write electro music that is not IDM at all. Usually it’s kind of creepy, like The Knives, and sometimes it is a little Goldfrappy, but it is not Uncanny-y. Usually.
I heard Ghosts on WOXY about two weeks ago, while completely immersed in some other activity, and barely registered the song. I remember thinking, how interesting and how unlike Ladytron. Then it was out of my mind. That was until waking up this morning with about half of the chorus in my head inexplicably. It took me about an hour of wracking my brain to come up with the rest of the chorus, and then Google took over.
After a couple of listens, I figured out why this song won’t leave my head. First there are the lyrics of the chorus: “There’s a ghost in me … who wants to say I’m sorry …. doesn’t mean I’m sorry”. How odd and intriguing. Lyrically, the chorus is hypnotic and just strange enough to get wrapped on auto-loop in my poor little brain. The music at the beginning is really good as well – others have pointed out that it sounds right out of Dr. Who. It works. Finally, this song is being released as a single along with three mixes, and you can find those using the internetz the usual way, and at least two are quite quite interesting.
Update: This song is permanently stuck in my head. I just sang it for fifteen minutes straight in the shower … and I don’t sing in the shower. Need help!!!!
If this song doesn’t suggest an exceptionally awesome, hypothetical episode of Miami Vice, I don’t know what does. 6:25 of totally cheesasm. Was in the mix on the lunch hour Old School jam. I think some of you know what I’m talking about.
I remember this from Friday Night Videos. I never heard it on the radio. The radio had already passed on Prince as a “5 tracks form the album get played” kind of guy. I mean “Kiss” was pretty big off of Parade but I really don’t think this got broad play. I always liked the funky cloud video. Certain just average Prince is still really good.
This song might work if science were like CSI in ultra modern sleek super discos with supremely attractive people taking each other’s DNA samples and what not. The beat you hear is the slow throbbing of geekly loins. Sad. It’s not really like that in real labs all the time. Or ever. Keep on dreaming sexy science studs and babes!
I heard this track twice on WOXY and can’t stop listening to it. Initially, I thought it was some bizarre cover or remix of an existing song – I can’t quite explain why I thought it had the lyrics to that insipid Pink song, but it doesn’t. At any rate, I find this track super interesting for all sorts of reasons. The rhythm of the voice is entirely off and intentionally so. Syllables are stretched, repeated, and slaughtered in an almost random way. The whole meter of the song is uneven and that’s what I love. The instrumentation is dark and electronic and simmers without a hip-hop backing until the last part of the song, where it finally lets loose a danceable beat. They lyrics are funny and hedonistic, as if you couldn’t possibly take it seriously.
As most of you know, this is a genre I know NOTHING about. I don’t know the personalities, influences, or politics. What I do know is that people seem to hate Uffie (who collaborates with Justice on this track only) passionately. I’m not sure why, but I’m sure they have good reasons. It could be backlash against a young, cute, white “rapper”, whose other songs sound to me like utter disasters; but I’m not judging her music here, only her collaboration with Justice. The Indie media seems to like them enough, with many comparisons to Daft Punk. Anyway, there are some spectacularly funny rips on this track. This particular response made me laugh to no end. This is perhaps the last genre of music that anybody would guess me doing a SoftD in, but I heard it on my iPod, and I can’t get it out of my head. This short-lived New Age duo made something so quintessential ’80s and funny that it didn’t seem fair not to relish in its campiness. The story is kind of funny, especially featuring a Lola(!) and the synths are full-on, but the kicker is the chorus. It’s so rhythmically perfect. A. E. I. O. U. Some. Times. Y.
